Emma West Trial Delayed for the Third Time

The trial of Emma West on racially aggravated public order offences has been delayed for the third time (http://www.thisiscroydontoday.co.uk/Emma-West-trial-adjourned-time/story-16820636-detail/story.html).  No further date has been set.   The trial was originally scheduled for June, then July and finally September 5^th.  The ostensible reason for the latest delay is the same as it was previously, further psychiatric reports are being sought by the prosecution.

It is true that cases can be delayed several times for reasons which are entirely legitimate. Further evidence directly relating to the immediate  facts of the case, that is, what happened rather than why it happened,  may be  being sought with a reasonable chance of success. Examples  would be where witnesses have not been  interviewed because they are not in the country,  but are believed to be returning in the foreseeable future or documents are being withheld by a body such as a bank and their release or otherwise is the subject of ongoing court action.  But there is nothing like that here, for the delay is simply down to further psychiatric reports being wanted.  That is something largely within the control of those commissioning them.  The fact that it is the prosecution which is asking for more reports is highly significant because it suggests that the ones they have already commissioned are not to their liking, that is, they are detrimental to the prosecution.

The case is not that complex. The prosecution have the recording.  They have had ample time to test it to see if it has been tampered with.  As the delay in trying the case is ascribed solely to the need for psychiatric reports, presumably the prosecution either have witness statements from  the person who filmed the incident and possibly others amongst the people present  or have decided that their evidence is not required for a prosecution.

There is a further consideration.  Because of the extensive mainstream  media  publicity given to the case,  and the fact that it deals  with the most politically toxic subject in modern Britain, namely, race,  this is a high-profile prosecution. The case was given further potency in the public’s mind  because  Ms West was put in a high security prison “for her own safety” .

Compare the time taken in Ms West’s case compared with  that of the England footballer  John Terry’s case for racially abusing the black QPR player Anton Ferdinand.  The two cases are similar. Terry pleaded not guilty and the evidence against him were recordings of  the game in which he was alleged to have made the remarks.   If Terry’s  trial had gone ahead  when it was first scheduled rather than being delayed by his defence asking for a delay,   the case would probably have been tried in April or May (the delay of the trial was granted on 2 February).  That would have been only six or seven months after the alleged offence  – the alleged offence took place on 31 October 2011. (Terry was found not guilty when the case was tried).

Ms West  first appeared in court was charged on 28^th November 2011  (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/nov/29/woman-court-racist-abuse-tram). Thus more than nine months have passed since charges were brought against her. Because no future trial date has been set it is probable that a year or more will have elapsed before she is brought to court, if indeed, she ever is tried.

Why is there this ever more unreasonable delay? It could be that the CPS are simply hoping that if they request enough psychiatric reports , sooner or later one will meet their purposes.  But I doubt that is the reason,  because psychiatric reports not favourable to the prosecution could become strong defence evidence. More  probable reasons for the delay are that the CPS  is hoping the stress of the delay will cause Ms West to change her plea to guilty or they are simply paralysed by her intended plea of Not Guilty and simply do not know what to do.

The CPS’ difficulties have been made more difficult with the appearance on YouTube of a  black woman engaging in violently anti-white rant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcZ1D2LCsao). She was arrested and questioned by the police in late August (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2191075/Racist-rant-London-bus-Police-investigate-outburst-passenger-posted-YouTube.html).    This rant is crudely abusive of white people:

‘I’m so glad. I’m born black and I’ll die black. I was born African and I’ll f****** die African.’

‘The only reason I was born in this country is because you f****** people brought my people here.’

‘My parents are f****** African, born in Jamaica. And I’m f****** African, born in England and I can’t stand you white people, I tell you.’

‘I don’t care what none of you lot got to say because at the end of the day if you lot would have had a choice you will f****** go with your people and I’ll go with mine.

‘Free speech. I hate white people. I can’t stand none of you.’

Unlike the Emma West case the mainstream media coverage of this anti-white racism has been minimal. I have been unable to find any details of whether the woman has been charged or who she is. If anyone has such information please let me know.

If this case is not prosecuted or if Ms West is prosecuted first and is given a prison sentence, it would be difficult for the woman in the video quoted from above not to receive similar treatment if not more severe treatment as her comments were vulgarly racist while Ms West is simply complaining about the fact that her country has been invaded through mass immigration.

The problem for the CPS (and the British elite generally) is that while it may suit their politically correct purposes to have the occasional prosecution of a native white Briton for alleged racism for the purposes of intimidation of the native British population as a whole,  such prosecutions carry  three great dangers for the elite.  The first is that the occasional Briton who is charged will fail to play ball and plead guilty accompanied by a Maoist-style confession of abject horror at their behaviour.  Even a few trials where the defendant pleads not guilty is potentially very damaging, especially if  the defence is based on the grounds of free expression and the right  to dissent from the liberal internationalist credo on multiculturalism, mass immigration and the joy of diversity.  This could be a fear in the prosecution’s mind in Ms West’s case.

The second danger is that the British  elite  cannot afford to have too many prosecutions of native Britons because that just looks too much like a police state.  What the elite prefer, at least  for the present,  are the police “investigating” alleged racist crimes with absolutely no intention of bringing charges. The idea here  is that the police can  rely  on the media to give such cases wide publicity,  which publicity serves the purposes of intimidating the native British population without the need for trials.

The third danger stems from the fact that  ethnic and racial minorities in Britain are, as anyone who lives in a racially and ethnically mixed area knows (I have done so  for over 40 years) ,  generally much more likely to engage in outright , vulgar and unambiguous racism, both directed at native Britons and by one minority against another, than native Britons.  This is rarely if ever admitted or even raised as a possibility in  the mainstream media , but the rise of photophones and websites such as YouTube probably means  that quite a few racist rants by those ethnic and racial minorities will reach public attention.  That presents the authorities with a dilemma: either they stop prosecuting native white Britons who are recorded being racist (or what passes for racist in the Brave New World of politically correct Britain) or they have to prosecute racial and ethnic minorities for the same thing.  An even handed approach would probably lead to an embarrassingly large number of prosecutions of racial and ethnic minorities. This would be anathema to the politically correct British elite because  their  view of race is that only white people can be racist.

More pressingly for the elite, large numbers of prosecutions  of ethnic and racial minorities would undermine the politically correct propaganda that racial and ethnic diversity is an unalloyed joy good for any society.  This is of fundamental importance, because any elite which is in the grip of an ideology can sustain that ideology only while they control the media . Let free debate into the public fold and the ideology is done for.  Milton had it correctly: ‘And though all the winds of doctrine were let loose upon the earth, so  truth  be  in  the  field [and] we  do  injuriously  by  licensing  and prohibiting  to misdoubt her strength. Let her and  falsehood  grapple; who ever knew truth put to the worse,  in a free and open encounter…’ [Milton – Areogapitica].

I have express many times here that there is something wrong with the Attacks on Syria and the WILL to bring it down. I was aware of the planning of the Arab League in pressuring Syria to attack Israel in the Golan and Galilee Kibbutz, and some rockets been sent.

And Syria stopped. From then the Syria Problems started, and the accusation of Syria on been SOFT with Israel started to go all over the globe !

This was the last chance for Syria to comply with the demands of the Arab League, and Syria became an outcast ! And A Target, by all means !

I have found this testimony, that I know is true because I’ve hear others !

Syria was more on a traditional political construction, then a religious one, and it still is!

Hope in Syria and Iraq’s Turkish Autonomous Zone

Many Christians currently see a ray of hope in neighbouring Syria. Since the fall of Baghdad, the regime in Damascus, isolated by the United States, has taken in many thousands of Iraqi refugees. In doing so, it has demonstrated to the West the long-forgotten merits of the Arab nationalist Baath Party’s non-denominational doctrine. “Nobody here cares whether we are Sunnis, Shiites or Christians,” says Farid Awwad, a souvenir vendor who fled Iraq.

Awwad’s 12-year-old daughter was killed in an attack on a Chaldean church in Baghdad two years ago. “No one can take away our pain,” he says. “But at least we can live here, where we are treated like brothers.”

The number of Christians within the Syrian Baath Party organisation is disproportionately high, although most are non-practicing. Their presence in government service, including the military and intelligence agencies, is unprecedented in the Arab world. President Bashar Assad recently opened a conference of Arab law associations under the motto: “The fatherland is for everything, but religion is a matter for God” — words that would be alienating if not impossible in countries with a stronger Islamic influence. In Saudi Arabia, for example, which has no Christian minority of its own but employs tens of thousands of Christian guest workers from the Indian subcontinent and Africa, Christian church services are banned and punishable with severe penalties. Bibles and crucifixes are routinely confiscated. The Wahhabite religious police, the Muttawah, have even been known to raid private religious services.

Other Gulf states are more liberal, although religious freedom in the Western sense is virtually nonexistent in Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The Islamist opposition in Damascus, especially the banned Muslim Brotherhood, disparages the country’s unpopular Christians as “worshippers of a godless regime.”

There is only one other region of the Middle East where Christians enjoy freedoms comparable to those in Syria: the Kurdish Autonomous Zone in northern Iraq.

Several Christian parties recently introduced an unusual bill in the regional parliament in Arbil, the Kurdish capital. They proposed the establishment of a Christian autonomous zone in the eastern portion of the Iraqi province of Nineveh, the traditional homeland of Assyrian Christians and now partly controlled by Kurdish Peshmerga fighters. Under the bill, the Chaldean, Syrian and Assyrian Christian minorities would be granted official status under the constitution — first by the Kurdish regional parliament and then by the National Assembly in Baghdad.

The plan, which is everything but Christian folklore, has a good chance of succeeding. Units of the 750-member Hamdaniyah Brigade — a Christian militia that defends its churches with the same tactics Sunni and Shiite militias use in central Iraq to defend their mosques — are already patrolling the streets of Bartalla, a fast-growing Christian settlement 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of Mosul, the violence-ridden provincial capital. Bearded men wielding Kalashnikovs stand guard at a barrier in front of the town’s Syrian Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary. Photography is strictly forbidden.

“What else can we do?” asks Ghanem Gorges, the 43-year-old mayor of Karamlis, a Chaldean village a few kilometres south of Bartalla. Armed men, presumably mujahedeen from nearby Mosul, forced their way into the village four times this fall. Two weeks ago they kidnapped and murdered Shakib Paulus, a 25-year-old crane operator, whose body was found on the street in Arbil a few days later.

Anyone wishing to attend services at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Arbil must first pass a guard carrying an automatic pistol. A huge new building, to be used as a dormitory for the Babel College students who fled Baghdad, was dedicated at Christmas on the cathedral grounds, which are surrounded by a tall fence.

At this year’s Christmas service, Pastor Sisar did not deliver his sermon in Aramaic, the old church language of northern Iraq’s Christians, as is customary in Arbil. This time the mass was held in Arabic, because, like the pastor, the 400 men and women attending the service are all from Baghdad.

Sisar ended his sermon with the words “Barakat Allah aleikum” — “May the blessing of the Lord be with you.”

FIFA, the governing body of world football, have made a decision which has angered Britons up and down the country. In their infinite wisdom and in defence of their economic interests, FIFA have told the English FA and the England Squad that they cannot wear the poppy on their shirts. The rules regarding what a national football team may wear or display on the team shirts is governed by economic factors designed to protect the sponsors and give maximum visibility to the brand. The rules state that no political or religious emblems, nor religious, political or commercial slogans, may be displayed. Football must be neutral politically, religiously and commercially.

Yet the poppy is not a religious symbol, nor is it a political statement. It is not linked to any political party or ideology. It’s not a commercial symbol. It’s merely a symbol of our respect for fallen military servicemen and women who have died in wars defending Britain and her way of life. It’s a symbol of remembrance, a symbol to remind us of the horrors of war, not to glorify it.

Sep Blatter of FIFA is a well known Anglophobe, a man whose hatred of Britain and England in particular is well known. He had decided that the poppy could not be worn. He was completely unaware of the storm that was brewing. November is usually a time when England play friendly matches, and until now the poppy was not worn, and it was not an issue. So why now is almost the entire country up in arms?

Mr Blatter has completely misjudged the mood of the people of Britain with his spiteful, hateful decision. After the Islamists in London burned the poppy and disgusted the whole country with their behaviour and attitude at a time of national mourning and remembrance, people have become more aware of the importance of the poppy and of the events it signifies. Its something that cuts across political boundaries. It cuts across social and class boundaries. It cuts across ethnic boundaries: many, many ethnic minorities fought for Britain and the Empire in two World Wars. It binds the nation, and, if only for two minutes on Friday, and again for one minute on Sunday, Britain will be united and one.

The FIFA decision was so outrageous that Prince Harry and David Cameron have called for the ban to be lifted. But it’s the EDL’s rooftop occupation of the headquarters building of FIFA that finally persuaded Mr Blatter and his cronies to see the light and lift the ban. Tommy Robinson, Kev Carroll and four other members of the EDL occupied the roof and raised a banner across the top displaying the EDL’s anger at FIFA. it was a peaceful display by the EDL at the heart of world football. Tommy and Kev took the words of the poem literally to heart: ‘Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high’.

Tommy and Kev and the others have certainly taken the torch and held it high. The torch of freedom, liberty and the right to remember our fallen.

Mr Blatter, we hope you’ve taken notice at the depth of feeling in Great Britain at your foul action. We blew the whistle and flagged your decision as off-side. It’s good that you had the sense to reverse it. For no-one can tell a Briton what he can and cannot do in his own country. The last little dictator to try lost very badly. No one has the right to take away our remembrance of those who gave their lives so that Mr Blatter can sit in his plush office in Zurich and run world football. You’ve not only scored an own goal, but you’ve also been shown the yellow card.

On this occasion, FIFA and Sep Blatter have shown themselves up as bad sportsmen of the worst kind, engaging in professional fouls and diving in the box.

In contrast Tommy and company are heroes in the mould of our forefathers who gave their lives. We salute you for taking the argument to FIFA and showing them that they are running football, not our country, and that they have no right to dictate what we can and cannot celebrate.

Mr Cameron, also take note of the mood of the country. We won’t be pushed about much longer. We will not suffer the indignities of government selling us down the river for a little halal meat and the block vote. We will not let our Britain disappear, and we will not have the memories of those who gave their lives for this beautiful land desecrated either by FIFA or by the Islamists.

The British people have spoken. Tommy was that voice, and we have won! Result: FIFA 0 — UK People 1!!!!!

Tommy Robinson (Stephen Lennon), leader of the anti-sharia English Defence League (EDL), is the UK’s most high profile prisoner of conscience. Wil. – Swiss Defence League

The English Defence league (EDL) held a demonstration today outside the Houses of Parliament.

The march was originally going to be held in Walthamstow, but the MET Police have banned all marches there for 30 days.

Anti-facist organisations were also present at the the protest, voicing their opposition to the EDL.

According to the EDL website the organisation is “peacefully protesting against militant islam”, but critics of the group accuse it of inciting racism..

NEW FILM EXPOSES RADICAL MUSLIM “DECEPTION”

The Investigative Project on Terrorism has released a new film exposing the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood inside the United States and how its front groups and sympathizers intimidate the major media and Hollywood.

The Muslim Brotherhood, now in charge of the Egyptian government and making major advances throughout the Middle East, was established in 1928 and is considered by experts to be the parent organization of terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda and Hamas.

Coming just days before the November 6 presidential election, the film, titled “Jihad in America: The Grand Deception,” highlights a problem of subversion in the U.S. that both major political party candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, have not been asked by the media to address.

Investigative Project on Terrorism executive director Steven Emerson, himself the target of death threats because of his work over the course of decades exposing Islamic extremist networks, spoke at a panel discussion in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, October 25th, that was attended by Accuracy in Media. We also reviewed an advance copy of the film.

Several years in the making, the film describes how Muslim Brotherhood fronts, such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), have pursued a strategy described in secret documents as the “Civilization-Jihadist Process” of destroying Western civilization from within and making America into an Islamic state.

The film includes FBI wiretaps of Islamists in the U.S. disguising their support of terrorist groups like Hamas and declaring, “Politics, like war, is deception.”

In addition to secret wiretaps and videos of Muslim Brotherhood activities, the film includes newly declassified documents and interviews with law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and journalists.

Although the film suggests the Muslim Brotherhood front groups are operating as illegal agents of a foreign power, there is more at stake than just subversion. The film contends that the Muslim Brotherhood is directly involved in radicalizing American Muslims who then carry out terrorist missions.

The film examines the case of Army Officer Nidal Malik Hasan, a self-described “solider of Allah” with links to al-Qaeda who is accused of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. The Obama Administration has described this mass murder as “workplace violence” and not “terrorism.”

The film looks at the case of al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Aulaqi, who was in contact with Nidal Malik Hasan and later killed in a U.S. drone strike, and highlights the pro-terrorist views of Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who has perhaps become best known for his program on Al-Jazeera.

Al-Jazeera English is seeking carriage on U.S. cable and satellite systems in the U.S. while its political patron and funder, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, just gave a major gift of $250 million to Hamas.

Despite the advances of the Muslim Brotherhood here and abroad, there has been a failure by political leaders to even acknowledge the nature of the problem. The film shows Obama Administration Attorney General Eric Holder during a congressional hearing, refusing to even use the term “radical Islam” in describing terrorism by Muslim militants.

But the Bush and Clinton Administrations are also criticized in the film for ignoring the threat and entertaining Muslim Brotherhood operatives at the highest levels of government.

However, the October 25th panel discussion featured Abdur-Rahman Muhammad, an outspoken Muslim who broke with the Muslim Brotherhood agenda and now writes a blog, “A Singular Voice.” He participated in meetings with top Muslim Brotherhood leaders in the U.S.

In terms of gaining acceptance in the U.S., Muhammad said the Muslim campaign against “Islamophobia” is deliberately modeled after the successful homosexual campaign to promote gay rights by railing against “homophobia.” He said the Muslim militants reject homosexuality but have entered into an alliance with homosexual and left-wing groups for political reasons under the guise of “civil rights.” He said their attitude is, “Once we seize power, we will deal with them [the homosexuals].”

Muhammad said Muslim leaders here and abroad have studied and copied communist methods of infiltrating and penetrating America and other Western nations. “They have studied the tactics of the far left,” he said.

Emerson, executive producer of the film, commented that it is ironic that Rachel Maddow of MSNBC has regularly featured CAIR representatives on her show when she would never be invited to speak to a CAIR conference because of her own open lesbianism.

Also speaking at the panel discussion, former FBI special agent Robert Stauffer described attending a Muslim Brotherhood conference in the U.S that featured banners saying, “Death to America,” and “Death to Israel.”

Other speakers were Rachel Milton, producer of “The Grand Deception;” Daniel Pipes, President of the Middle East Forum; and Michael Fechter, Editor-in-Chief of the Investigative Project’s website.

The film says CAIR’s terrorist connections have been whitewashed by such news organizations as the taxpayer-subsidized Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and cites evidence that Hollywood films are now screened and edited to eliminate negative depictions of Arabs and Muslims.

For example, in the 2002 film, “The Sum of All Fears,” the villains were changed from Muslims to neo-Nazis.

In other cases of “self-censorship,” in order to stave off charges of “Islamophobia,” the film notes that:

• Publishing giant Random House killed a book in 2008 about the Islam Prophet Muhammad’s relationship with his child bride. • Yale University Press published a book about Danish cartoons said to be offensive to Islam without publishing the cartoons themselves. • An episode of Comedy Central’s animated cartoon series “South Park” was deleted from the Internet because of threats over its depiction of Muhammad.

The FBI officially cut its ties to CAIR in 2009, after the organization was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator and a Hamas front in the Holy Land Foundation terrorist financing court case. CAIR has advised Muslims in America not to cooperate with the FBI.Abdul Rahman Al-Amoudi, now serving a 23-year prison term for supporting terrorism and terrorist groups, is a Muslim Brotherhood representative in the U.S. whose work is examined in detail in the film. He had been put in charge of the military Muslim chaplain program by the Defense Department and was sent on taxpayer-subsidized “good will missions” by the State Department in the 1990s.

Producers of the film attempted to interview Al-Amoudi in prison. He declined but sent a letter reaffirming his membership in the Muslim Brotherhood.

The film, near the end, shows Muslim Student Association supporter Amir Abdel Malik Ali having a student audience repeat a Muslim Brotherhood “pledge of allegiance” that ends with the statement, “I will die to establish Islam.”

No case illustrates the murderous deception of Western society by Islamic militants more than the recent episode involving Tariq Ramadan, the Swiss professor who was denied a visa to teach at Notre dame. His supporters in the U.S. rallied vigorously around Mr. Ramadan, protesting with total moral certitude the politically outrageous move by the U.S. government to muzzle a Muslim “moderate”. The coalition to defend Ramadan included The New York Times, The Washington Post, academic boards around the country, Islamic advocacy groups and human rights groups. Their near unanimous message was that Mr. Ramadan was a genuine “moderate” and “Islamic pluralist”, but that even if one disagreed with some of his statements, Mr. Ramadan surely should have been entitled to have his ideas debated in the great free marketplace of ideas of the American campus.

Miraculously, the coalition of high priests of political correctness, Wahabi groups masquerading as pluralists, and the elite censors of fair and balanced journalism did not prevail. Mr. Ramadan was not given a visa and soon, in an act of righteous indignation, refused to reapply for another visa.

Even after the murderous actions by Islamic militants on 9-11 in the U.S., and in fact in carrying out or planning terrorist operations in more than 90 countries between 1990 and 2003, the American intelligentsia in a devilish collusion with radical Islamic groups hiding under false veneer, have managed to perpetrate the grand deception of militant Islam: pretending to be moderate (small d) democrats, pluralists, and victims of hate. Radical Islamic groups have continued to invert reality, turning facts on their head, in a stunning ability to anoint themselves as the victims of hate as opposed to the murderous reality that they are the progenitors of hate. Where else could radical Islamic leaders like Yousef Al Qardawi, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who calls for killing Jews (not just Israelis but Jews) and Americans (not just occupiers), be described as “moderate” or a pro-western “reformer” or variations of this theme (Washington Post, The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times)? Where else could one hear that Jihad was a “beautiful” concept, as was broadcast recently on National Public Radio, devoid of any violent or militant meaning? NPR’s commentator was the daughter of an Islamic American leader who justified the killing of Robert Kennedy–a fact NPR withheld from its listeners but paled in comparison to its brazen willingness to air a de facto commercial for al Qaeda–with the commentator ending her Islamist (tax-payer subsidized) infomercial with the following line: “Someday, I hope ‘jihad’ will find its way back into our lexicon, when it can be used properly, in sentences like ‘She’s on a jihad to achieve the American Dream.'”

In the decade and a half before 9-11, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, al Qaeda and virtually every other radical Islamic group and leader successfully perpetrated the most brilliant strategic enemy deception in U.S. history by planting themselves in the heart of enemy territory under false cover as non-profit (and of course tax deductible) humanitarian groups, civil rights groups, and non-political religious institutions. Until 9-11, the deceit had continued with staggering success as radical Islamic groups and leaders were routinely invited to the White House, provided with federal funding, praised by politicians, and lionized by the media.

But before this charade was exposed, nearly 3,000 Americans were forced to pay with their lives as the price for the belated realization that we had been had. Suddenly, charities that had been secretly operating as conduits for terrorists and established American Muslim leaders leading double lives as terrorist masterminds were finally being recognized for what they were: Terrorists. And instead of being toasted at the State Department, they were now more appropriately being prosecuted, shut down and deported.

And yet, more than three years after 9-11, it would seem that this same homicidal self-delusion is alive and well in the United States. This is where Mr. Ramadan comes to play such a pivotal role in highlighting the danger of this continued self-deception.

First, Mr. Ramadan is not any more a moderate than David Duke would be considered a moderate on race relations. The only difference is that David Duke is not smart enough to speak in two languages, cloak his racism under the mantle of pluralism or enjoy the witting collaboration of the media.

In several interviews given to various European publications over the last few years, Mr. Ramadan has repeatedly provided a justification for terrorist acts against U.S. allies such as Israel and Russia and, more recently, against the U.S. itself. Asked by the Italian magazine Panorama if the killing of civilians is right, Mr. Ramadan unambiguously responded that “In Palestine, Iraq, Chechnya, there is a situation of oppression, repression and dictatorship. It is legitimate for Muslims to resist fascism that kills the innocent.” When asked if car bombings against U.S. forces in Iraq were legitimate, Professor Ramadan responded that “Iraq was colonized by the Americans. The resistance against the army is just.”

Mastering the art of taqiyya (double speaking to fool the unbelievers), Tariq Ramadan has enchanted many with his apparent moderation. But a careful examination of his words reveals that Professor Ramadan is not what he seems and claims to be. Yes, he says that he “agrees with integration” of Muslims in the West, but he is careful to say that “we [Muslims] are the ones who are going to decide the content.” He mollifies by saying that he accepts Western secular law, but, here’s the catch, “only if this law doesn’t force me to do things against my religion.” And when he is cornered with questions on the brutality of some punishments of Islamic law, such as stoning, he tells us that he is against them, but (there is always a “but”) they are in Quranic texts and so he cannot fully condemn them and we have to settle for “an absolute moratorium on all physical punishments.”

The telegenic, soft-spoken and charming professor is just the modern, westernized face of the same enemy that wears a different mask on other battlefields. As the distinguished expert of Middle East affairs Fouad Ajami recently wrote, Tariq Ramadan is, “in the world of the new Islamism, pure nobility.” His moderate façade hides his radical heart and just a careful read of his words would reveal it. France, the country that knows him best, has made up its mind on him. A court in Lyon recently said that preachers like Tariq Ramadan “can exert an influence on young Islamists and therefore constitute an incitement that can lead them to join violent groups.”

In France at least, some leftist intellectuals have recognized Mr. Ramadan for what he is. The self-censorious New York Times was even forced to report that Bernard-Henri Levy, who wrote the best-seller “Who Killed Daniel Pearl,” accused Ramadan of being the “intellectual champion of all kinds of double-talk” with a “racist vision of the world” and having promoted anti-Semitism. The Times further reported that Bernard Kouchner, the foreign aid advocate and former health minister of France, called Mr. Ramadan “absolutely a kook with no historical memory” and “a dangerous man.” He added, “The way he denounced some Jewish intellectuals is close to anti-Semitism.”

Still, the Ramadan fan club in the U.S. continued to portray the exclusion of Mr. Ramadan as part of an anti-Muslim campaign; the charge of anti-Muslim racism, part of the larger orchestration by radical Muslims to portray themselves as the victims of hate, has been mastered perfectly, requiring only the collaboration of the American media. At the height of the controversy last year, The New York Times opined that “American Muslim groups questioned the government’s ability or willingness to distinguish between what they see as Muslim moderates like Mr. Ramadan and extremists.” But who were these American Muslim groups, portrayed by the Times as intellectually honest arbiters of who really is a moderate? None other than off-shoots and branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic radical movement that gave birth to al Qaeda and Hamas, and whose founder was none other than Hassan Al-Banna, the grandfather of Mr. Ramadan.

And there are those who fall back on the free market response: Is the most powerful nation in the world afraid of allowing Mr. Ramadan access to the intellectual pluralism of the U.S., where free speech is honored as the most sacred privilege that we have?

Well, Mr. Ramadan does not need to be in the United States to convey his message and thoughts. Through the Internet, media and instant telecommunications, the American public is not being denied one iota of Mr. Ramadan’s propaganda.

After the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993, the same defenders of Mr. Ramadan–The New York Times and other elite media–were the first to ask probing and indignant questions about how the blind Sheik, with his radical views, was able to get visas to the United States in the early 1990’s. But that was before he was indicted or convicted of any U.S. crime. So apparently, the high priests at the time decided that the premium of free speech for non-U.S. guests was not sacred; that in fact, the right to visit the U.S. was not a constitutional right afforded to any citizen of the world, a view unfortunately increasingly espoused by editorial boards.

Title 8 U.S. Code Section 1182 requires the exclusion from the U.S. of any alien who has “used his position of prominence within any country to endorse or espouse terrorist activity, or to persuade others to support terrorist activity or a terrorist organization.” The provision seems written to fit Ramadan’s case. The entry into the United States of any foreign national is, by law, a privilege and not a right. It is preposterous to ask the U.S. government to disregard its own laws and to grant this privilege to a person who openly condones attacks against U.S. forces and interests.

Aside from the legal justification for barring Mr. Ramadan, the moral reason for keeping Mr. Ramadan out is the same reason why the U.S. has for years denied visas to neo-Nazi proponents from Western Europe. It is not only the access to the United States that both neo-Nazis and Mr. Ramadan have sought. Rather it is the official imprimatur of the U.S. government, an effective declaration of political legitimacy attending to the granting of the visa. And that is precisely same legitimacy that allowed militant Islamic groups to operate for so long in the United States. Do we really want to repeat history?

The “morning after” has yet to take shape in Egypt. But whatever it looks like, it will be the dawn of a new life for the granddaddy of political Islam, the Muslim Brotherhood.

The new Egyptian Vice-President, Omar Suleiman, has publicly invited the organization to participate in talks about election reform, a move that marks a new chapter in the 83-year history of the Brotherhood, and the Egyptian regime’s formal recognition of the Islamists as political players is echoing across the region.

The trouble with Egypt: What will Obama make of this?

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 in Egypt by a schoolteacher who envisioned an Islamic state free of what he saw as dangerous secular and foreign influence.

Its tactics and language have shifted over the years, but the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt insists that it does not want to force an Islamic government and Islamic law on any country. Its leaders say they take a long view and believe that Muslim societies, naturally religious, will demand a religious state if given a free choice.

But the Brotherhood, now a multinational organization, is hardly monolithic and its trajectory in different countries shows how difficult it is to predict what its brand of political Islam in Egypt might turn out to be.

Hamas, a Brotherhood offshoot that controls Gaza, has fought pitched battles with the secular Palestinian Authority that runs the West Bank. The ruling AK Party in Turkey, which grew out of the Brotherhood movement there, maintains close military ties with Israel.

In other countries in the Arab world, the Brotherhood and its offshoots have sunk roots that give them a deep influence – even as secular leaders alternately suppressed, tolerated and tried to co-opt them. In Egypt and Jordan, for example, they have hospitals and clinics, offer scholarships for students, and control professional associations for doctors and lawyers. When a powerful earthquake rocked Cairo in 1992, the organization stepped in faster than the government to provide food, temporary shelter and medical care to people who lost their homes.

In Jordan, the Islamic Action Front has participated in some elections and boycotted others, most recently last November. In 1989, it won enough seats to join a coalition government. Its publishing house for years produced the textbooks used in Jordan’s public schools.

Their ability to run parallel governments is a reflection, and a predictor, of their political sway and potential. Given a chance, they might win in fair elections by default because the countries where they operate have suppressed all alternative political forces.

“These societies are deeply religious,” said Joost Hiltermann, an analyst with the International Crisis Group. “They’d do very well, but that’s also because there are no other parties other than the ruling party in all these cases. They’ve used their social activities, their charitable activities, to build a political movement, and no one else has done that.”

That potential, and the violence that some Brotherhood groups have used, have all but eliminated the movement in other countries.

The Islamic Salvation Front, with its roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, came close to winning parliamentary elections in Algeria in 1992 before the military stepped in to cancel the ballot and imprison the Front leaders.

Syrian dictator Hafez al-Assad faced down a violent challenge from the Brotherhood by hunting its members down in the town of Hama, bombarding the city and killing an estimated 10,000 people in the process.

In the past week, Muslim Brotherhood leaders from Egypt have sent mixed messages.
In an interview on the Iranian TV station Alalam, Mohammed Ghanem said President Hosni Mubarak “is protected by the Zionists” and he called on Egyptians to block the Suez Canal so prevent oil shipments to Israel.

In a separate interview with the BBC, another spokesman, Kamal el-Helbawy, said the Muslim Brotherhood would not cancel Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel if it comes to power but would reconsider whether it was valid because of the “injustices” in Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. As for Egyptians, he said, the Brotherhood would offer “freedom of belief, freedom of expression, everything.”

Other commentators have held up Turkey as an example of Islamists working within a democratic system and pragmatically setting aside any ideological mission to create an Islamic state. The comparison, though, is not valid, according to Andrew Mango, an author and historian of Turkey.

The AK Party grew out of an Islamist political movement that had won elections in Turkish cities and served in Parliament for a decade. “They have considerable experience of government by now, knowledge of how far they can go and long experience of interacting with Europe,” Mr. Mango said. “Egypt could try to emulate Turkey, but it’s a long process.”

The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood also appears hesitant about whether it is ready to jump into the political fray. Mohammed al-Beltagi, the group’s overall leader, has said it has no plans to present a presidential candidate or be part of any coalition government in the future.
But in its years in the political wilderness, the Brotherhood has become a diverse movement with competing trends and personalities.

“They said ‘no’ to democracy, then they changed. They said ‘no’ to women and then they changed,” Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss-based Muslim scholar, said in an interview with Al Jazeera television.

“Islamism,” added Mr. Ramadan*, a grandson of the Brotherhood’s founder, Hassan al-Banna, “is a multifaceted reality.”

*Tariq Ramadan, Muslim Scholar Formerly Banned From U.S., Returns To Country

NEW YORK — A Muslim scholar who was banned from entering the United States for years has made his first public U.S. appearance since the ban was lifted, saying he looks forward to when he can enter the country without answering questions from authorities on what he plans to speak about.

Tariq Ramadan spoke Thursday alongside other scholars in a panel discussion at The Cooper Union university in Manhattan. They discussed issues facing Muslim-majority countries and Muslims in Europe and the United States.

Ramadan, a 47-year-old professor at Oxford University in England, had planned to move to Indiana to take a tenured teaching job at the University of Notre Dame when his U.S. visa was revoked in 2004.

Authorities said he had donated $1,336 to a charity that gave money to a Palestinian militant group. The American Civil Liberties Union claimed in court that he was being excluded because of his views.

Ramadan, a Swiss citizen, has said he opposes terrorism and Islamic extremism and promotes peaceful solutions. He has criticized the U.S. invasion of Iraq and U.S policies in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

He and another banned scholar, Adam Habib, from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, were allowed back into the U.S. after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in January signed orders permitting their returns.

The Department of State said when the orders were signed that it wanted to enable the professors to return to encourage a global debate.

Ramadan said Thursday he’ll be speaking with scholars in Chicago and Detroit before finishing his trip on Monday in Washington, where he will meet with members of Congress.
